International Day of Peace

peace signThe History of Peace Day
by: Joseph Bailey

studentsstudentsstudentsPeace Day just past, Ajo felt the movement and celebrated. The first Day of Peace was celebrated in September of 1982. But it wasn't until 20 years later in 2002, the General Assembly confirmed September 21st as the official date for International Day of Peace. By making the Day of Peace the United Nations committed to global peace and wanted everyone from everywhere to join in. People from all over the world celebrate in big or small events, alone or in communities all for one goal, to spread peace."Peace Day should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples…

"This day will serve as a reminder to all peoples that our organization, with all its limitations, is a living instrument in the service of peace and should serve all of us here within the organization as a constantly pealing bell reminding us that our permanent commitment, above all interests or differences of any kind, is to peace."  comment

Class of 2010 Presents:
Chanel Garcia
By: Cinnamon Robles

Chanel GarciaChanel Garcia is one of Ajo High Schools' graduating seniors. Some of Chanel's hobbies are hanging out with friends, cruising around, eating, and watching T.V.

Chanel has participated in Student Council, History Club, and National Honor Society. She has also been part of volleyball, basketball, and track. As a child she dreamed of becoming the next "Britney" or "Christina" but soon changed her mind when she found out she had a horrible voice.

After High School she plans to go traveling through Brazil or South America with her best friend Mandi. She also plans to attend Arizona State University and study Political Science.

Her advice to underclassmen is, "Don't wait till last minute, and make good decisions." She also added, "Enjoy all of your time in high school with your friends, because before you know it's all over."

Spotlight
By: Cinnamon Robles

Sherri Hurd has recently been put in the, "Spotlight". Although many of us know her as getting our late pass from or keeping track of our attendance, Sherri has many qualities just like us. Some of her hobbies are, knitting, reading, studying for her Master's Degree in Business and Administration, cooking, and hanging out with friends.

Some of her likes are doing a little bit of everything, and her dislikes are rude people. One of her many quotes are, "Throughout our lives there are people we won't get along with, but we need to make the best of whatever situation we're in."

Her "Dream Vacation" is a cruise around the WORLD! Wow, what a vacation that would be. If Sherri had one wish, she stated it would be, "To have every student who attended Ajo School to graduate." Her advice to students is, "You only have one go-around at high school, so make the most of it, and be active."

Arely's Imagination

My mind, you see, is a lot of jumbo-mumbo (Yeah, you read right. I flipped it) and you wouldn't understand it even if I bothered trying to explain a portion of it to you. I don't understand myself and I truly do not understand my childhood.

When I was little I use to think that everyone around me was a robot. At the time I was 6 years old. I had NO idea what a robot was but I thought people were robots. It's confusing in a way, unless you really think about it. I seriously thought my closest friends were these mechanical beings and when they would cry, I didn't feel sympathy for them. That's because I thought they had pressed a simple button that read "cry". Even when my mom would cry I thought it wasn't a big deal, like this was all a big show for me.

I guess it was because I can't feel what someone else would feel and I thought they were fake, artificial people. When people died I thought that they forgot to charge their battery or they were just really rusty, old robots. I won't even try to explain the skin, hair, nails and organs because that my friend is a pretty creepy story. I thought I was the only person alive in this world and that everything pretty much revolved around me (not in a conceited, "princess" way but that I was the only living thing here).

When I was young I thought many things but when I tell anyone about this particular story, they give me that look and I give them that look back and I tell them "Yeah, I know right?". You could call me weird but my imagination ran wild, and still to this day it continues to roam. But, seriously, think about it; what if everyone else in this world was a robot and you were the only human?  comment

The International Day of Peace was on September 21st. Students started off the celebration at the Pep Assembly which was held during 6th period on Monday. All the high school students were provided with a drum and we were taught to play different beats together.

After school everyone congregated in the grassy area in front of the school where free hotdogs, chips, bananas and drinks were given out. There was also free face painting. Following the celebration at the school, the Tohono O'odham school, the Sonoyta school and Ajo school all joined in the parade. They walked from Ajo High School to the Plaza where more festivities took place including folklorico dancing and fire dancing.

Kenya "the drum guy" gathered a group of people together in a circle around the flag pole to play the drums. There were also several food booths selling varieties of cultural cuisines.  comment

Football

footballfootballThe football team started their season on August 21, with a scrimmage against the ASDB Sentinels. Though stats weren't taken because it wasn't a conference game, Coach McGoldrick said that the Raiders tried their hardest, and saw improvement. The Raiders' first home game was September 11 against the St. David Tigers, and unfortunately came up as a loss for our team. The score was 68 – 0.

I recently had the chance to sit down and talk to our own Coach McGoldrick about the games the football team has played and the upcoming game against the Patagonia Lobos, our homecoming game. I asked how the season was going, and he replied "It's going. We're trying our best and we have a young team with players that are working hard." The returning players on our team include senior Jose Ortiz, junior Chad Coyle, sophomores Kene Richardson and Angel Netherlin, followed by many hard working freshmen.

The Lady Raiders kicked off their 2009 season by playing the Green Fields September 1 away. Unfortunately, they lost to the Lady Griffins in three games. That Friday our ladies went out to play Tanque Verde. Though injuries held them back, they played their hardest. They lost in four games.

After a more than rocky startfor our Lady Raider volleyball team, they went away to play San Pasqual. The ladies were able to pick it up and won their first game without two of their players who suffered from injuries. The next day after that first win, the Lady Raiders won another game against Immaculate Heart. That put them on a two win streak. Then they went on to beat ASDB which now put our Raiders on a 3 win streak! When they played Baboquiveri on Monday, they had their recovered players back again. Though they played hard, but still lost in three games.

The next home game will be during homecoming week on Friday against the Lady Patagonia Lobos, so go off and show your support to both the Volleyball team and our Football team.
