Yankees Vs. Phillies

Yankees Vs. Phillies
By: Arely Nunez

NY

The Yankees won the World Series 2009 thanks to the World Series 2009 Game 6 score. The winning was inevitable in many ways but the score cleared all doubt. The Yankees had gone eight years without winning a World Series and if they had gone another year, Joe Girardi would have been run out of town.

The World Series 2009 Game 6 score was controlled by Hideki Matsui when he singlehandedly made the Yankees win the World Series, November 4th, 2009. Pedro Martinez was at his weakest and Hideki took full advantage of it. The Yankees did not give the Phillies any breaks. Andy Pettite wasn't as strong on three days' rest, throwing many balls and almost every time the Phillies made contact.

The Phillies got base runners in every inning but meekly left most of them on. The World Series 2009 Game 6 score was a letdown, however, after five tight games. The Fall Classic went to a game 6 for the first time in years, and it was lopsided, anticlimactic affair, except for the Yankees.  comment

Why So Much Gum?
By: Savannah McCasland

gum

This year, students at Ajo High School have been faced with a lot of new restrictions. One of those that seem to be the hardest to deal with is the 'no gum chewing' rule. While the rules have been put into effect with 'full force', I myself have seen more gum around campus this year than in past.

Many students agree that we have stepped in more gum now than ever, and teachers' are left scratching their heads wondering why. A possible explanation for this might be the new detention that was established this year. For those of you that don't know, this 'new detention' includes scraping gum before school.

So what is the cause for all the excess gum? We'll leave it up to you to find out.  comment

Why Is Yawning Contagious?
By: Arely Nunez

If I yawn, most likely you will yawn as well. Why? No one has devised a fully convincing reason why. You can see someone yawn and without thinking about it, you will yawn as well. In an effort to find the answer, the Finnish government recently funded a brain scanning study. The results turned up some hard-to-interpret, possible clues.

It also confirmed the obvious: yawn contagion is largely unconscious. Wherever it might affect the brain, it bypasses the known brain circuitry for consciously analyzing and mimicking other people's actions. This circuitry is called the "mirror-neuron system," because it contains a special type of brain cells, or neurons, that become active both when their owner does something, and when he or she senses someone else doing the same thing.

Apart from the physical brain mechanisms of yawn contagiousness, researchers have offered different reasons as to why it exists. Some have proposed that in early humans, yawn contagiousness might have helped people communicate their alertness levels to each other, and thus coordinate their sleep schedules. It may not be one of life's deepest mysteries but it has a peculiar staying power.  comment

In The Spotlight

Cameron
Jake Cameron

Jake Cameron, a freshman at Ajo High School has recently been posted, "In the Spotlight". Some of Jake's hobbies are playing football, eating, watching T.V. (mainly South Park, and Family Guy), playing video games, and hanging out with friends.

Some of the things he likes include Crest toothpaste, cooking steak, and eating pancakes. His dislikes are people who gossip, people who stick gum under their desks, and bell peppers (who would have guessed).

When Jake was asked, Are you a dare devil? His response to this question was, "Only when it comes to food. I'll try anything!!!" One of Jakes favorite movie characters is Jack Sparrow, from the Pirates of the Caribbean, (because he doesn't care about anyone besides himself.)

One of Jake's "DREAM" vacation spots is a cruise around Greece. If he had 3 wishes, they would be to be rich, turn invisible, and to have more wishes!!!

Thanks Jake, for lettingpeople know more about you!!!

JOM is a supplementary educational program that was created in the 1930s specifically for Native American stuents to attain academic success. Those eligible for the program must be at least 1/4 Indian and registered as a member of a federally recognized tribe with a tribal registration number.

Mrs. Marcia Fober is the local JOM-Title VII Indian education coodinator. We would like the parents to be active members of this program; they have the right to input to the school system through JOM.

Through this program there are many opportunities out there for young Native American students such as youth conferences, scholarships, and the knowledge bowl.

In The Mind of a Senior
By: Cinnamon Robles

Savannah McCasland
Savannah McCasland

Savannah McCasland is one of Ajo High Schools' graduating seniors. Let's get in her head and find out what some of her interests are, and plans for her future. Some of her hobbies are hanging out with friends, making up jokes about Chanel, cruising, playing car tag, sports, and listening to music. Savannah has participated in Volleyball and Softball. She has also been involved with Student Council, and National Honor Society.

As a child Savannah had dreamed of becoming a doctor, so she can help people, but her dreams have changed since then. Her plans after high school are to attend a college, most likely the University of Arizona. She also plans to travel, so she can see the world.

Savannah's advice to underclassmen is, "Do your best while you're younger, because you'll be open to more opportunities when you're older."

What Teachers Really Want To Say
By: Chanel Garcia

I'm sure like any high school student, one may wonder what teachers really want to say but don't. Take for example, when the class is misbehaving and completely ignoring them, what's really going through their head? Or how about the things we do that really get underneath their skin. For the answers to these questions I went straight to the horse's mouth. Who better to ask than a teacher! I cut it down to the three questions I thought to be the most common and interviewed one of the newest teachers to the game, Mr. Harvey.

Q: In what circumstances do you have to hold back from what you would really like to say?

A: "It is difficult. Today is such a politically correct environment that expressing a bias or making a comment maybe perceived totally off context or intent. It often requires avoiding controversial topics in favor of a more bland approach. Blandness can discourage student engagement and learning. Teachers walk a fine line and must always be cognizant of the circumstances."

Q: When a class isn't listening or paying much attention, is it hard not to lose your cool?

A: "It is not about losing your cool. It is about finding the most effective means of getting the class back on task. Having to raise your voice to be heard is frustrating and ineffective. Often the best method is changing to a new assignment and redirecting the focus of students."

Q: What are some pet peeves as teachers, do you have?

A: -Students talking and interrupting teachers and other students. Asking a teacher to repeat the instructions to an assignment when they have just completed giving the instructions.-Being tardy everyday to class. So after reading this article, I hope you think twice before you decide to talk to your friend about your crazy weekend during a lecture, or take the long way to class.  comment

Movie Review:
An American Haunting
By: Joseph Bailey

An AmericanHaunting

The only reported case in the United States where a spirit has caused the death of a person. "An American Haunting" is based on true events that occurred in Tennessee during the 1800's. It begins with, John Bell who is in court being accused of stealing land. The offended woman has claims of practicing witchcraft and tries to scare John.

Over a period of two years the Bell Family was visited by a phantom, visits eventually grew into physical violence and caused many emotional problems to the family. The ghost made a threat to eventually kill one of the family members.

Betsy, the youngest daughter encounters the entity and is beat and even dragged up the stairs. She has many sleepless nights and becomes tormented. The movie is kind of slow paced at first, but give it a chance and it will soon unravel it's chilling, frightening, moments.*paraphrased from rottentomatoes.com  comment

Senior Advice for Incoming Freshmen
By: Journey Jones

It's the beginning of the second quarter and the 8th graders are closer to becoming Freshmen. It's going to be difficult, so I asked two Seniors for some advice. I asked Luz Flores and Ty-Ahna Jones and here is what they said:

"High school might be fun, but you have to work hard at it."

"Go Green! Stay on top of things in every class, have fun but not too much, and participate in school events.

"Relax. Everybody has a 'Freshman Moment', whether it's as obvious as being in the wrong class on the first day, or as subtle as wearing an uncoordinated oufit. If it's major, you'll learn from it; and if it's minor, you'll laugh about it later. Revel in it, because almost any mistake you commit within the next school year can just be chalked up to Freshman year."  comment
